Media Downloaders

There are many media downloaders available. There are locally installed apps , browser extensions and online options, As usual for this site only free options for Windows are considered. Most collectors of media will head over to YouTube but other sites stream video and audio content.

1. Local Media Downloaders

These are apps that you download and install on your PC. It is better to have a simple downloader without too many options. There should only be a few file formats and quality settings and an easy to use interface. Settings should be simple and easy to understand.

2. Online DownLoaders

Normal precautions need to be taken when uploading/downloading form the Web. From the sites I tested there were mixed levels of success. Most seemed to want you to download an app to your computer for local downloads. The main download sites such as YouTube are always trying to prevent sites and apps from downloading their content. To this end what may work today won't necessarily work tomorrow. The links below of for sites I've tried  and are working at this point in time. Overall the dedicated apps above are more reliable and faster than the online approach, but if you want to minimise apps on your computer and only occasional download then you may want to give this approach a try.

3. Browser Extensions for Downloading

Browser Add-Ons/Extensions are a good way to build up your collection. Extensions can be specific to a particular set of browsers. The best way is to go to the browser shop and download from there. Most will nag away for you to purchase the premium edition with some features disabled in the free edition
