Windows Tools - Recycle Bin

The recycle bin has been with windows since Windows 95. Its intention is to provide a storage cache for files/folders you have deleted. You can then decide to restore or permanently delete. There are also settings for deleting files without storing and allocating the amount of disk space for the recycle bin

Accessing the Recycle Bin

Windows 10 does not make access to the recycle bin easy and it is hidden by default. It can be made visible on the desktop or file manager - from the file manager it can be Pinned to the Start Menu to be displayed on the start menu display if you want.

Recycle Bin Options

Once you access the recycle bin the file manger ribbon changes to give access to various options. A lot of these options are also available by right clicking and bringing up the context menu options

Empty Recycle Bin

This option does exactly what it states. All files are deleted and in general are not recoverable. This frees up disk space. There are ways to try and recover such file using third party apps though this is not always successful. Best to consider them gone forever

Custom Size

Refers to the size of the recycle bin. The calculation is based on the quota for users.

For a single user set up the quota Is not considered and the whole disk space is used in the calculation. Thus for a single user the calculation is 10% of the first 40Gb plus 5% of the disk space.

If the default allocation does not meet the user requirements a manual value can be entered.
